1.COMPREHENSION (In About 150-250)       7 Marks
The aim of 'Reading Comprehension' is to measure your ability to read and understand. For this reason, you will not be penalised for mistakes in grammar, spelling or punctuation, provided that you have shown a good understanding of the passage. However, you still need to be careful with your language because marks can only be awarded if you have expressed your ideas clearly. Examiners cannot give you any marks if they are unable to understand what you are trying to say !
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
PASSAGE-1
We must take proper care of our hair. Healthy hair looks beautiful. It is important to keep our hair clean by washing it regularly with shampoo. This removes the dirt and dust and prevents scalp infections. For heatlhy hair, we must eat a balanced diet with lots of green vegetables, fresh fruits and cereals. If we follow a healthy regime of yoga, we can enjoy healthy hair as it slows down the process of graying and ageing.
Questions:
(i) Why is it important to keep our hair clean? 
(ii) How can we get healthy hair? 
(iii) How does yoga help in having healthy hair? 
(iv) What causes scalp infection ?
Answers:
(i) It is important to keep our hair by clean by washing it regularly with shampoo. This removes the dirt and dust and prevents scalp infections.
(ii) We can get healthy hair by balanced diet with lots of green vegetables, fresh fruits and cereals.
(iii) The yoga helps in having healthy hair with slowing down the process of graying and ageing. 
(iv) The dirt and dust causes scalp infections.
PASSAGE-2
Animals can be grouped under four categories depending on their food habits. Animal that eat plants are called herbivorous like cows, sheep and giraffes. Carnivorous animals are those who eat flesh of other animals like tiger and lions. Some birds who eat flesh are called scavengers like the eagles and vultures. Animals that eat both plants and flesh are called omnivorous like the bears.
Questions:
(i) Who are carnivorous animals? 
(ii) Name the scavengers..
(iii) What do herbivorous animis eat ?
(iv) In how many groups can thanimals be divided depending on their food habits ?
Answers: 
(1) Who eat flesh like Tigers ad Lions. 
(ii) Eagles and Vultures. 
(iii) The herbivorous animals iplants and grass. 
(iv) Three groups can the animals be divided depending on their food habits-Carnivcous, harbivorous and omnivorous.
PASSAG:-3
The sun, eight planets, satellies and some other celestial bodies form the solar system. The un is the centre of the solar system. The sun is the ultimate sourc of heat and light for the solar system. There are eight planets in our solar system-Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Jranus and Neptune. Mercury is the nearest planet to the sun. 
Questions:
(i) What form the solar systen? 
(ii) What does the sun provideus with? 
(iii) How many planets are ther in the solar system? 
(iv) Name the nearest planet tothe sun.
Answers:
(i) The sun, eight planets, satelites and some other celestial bodies form the solar system. 
(ii) The sun provides us with leat and light. 
(iii) There are eight planets in our solar system. 
(iv) Mercury is the nearest planet to the sun.
PASSAGE-4
The giraffe is the tallest of all living land animals. A male can go up to 18 feet and a female up to 15 feet. Such height enables them to escape the competition for ground level grass. The height gives him a long range of vision and also a warning of the approaching enemy early. Giraffes eart a variety of leaves, but acacia leaves are their favourite.
Questions:
(i) Which is the tallest animal on this earth? 
(ii) What is the maximum height of a graffe ? 
(iii) How does their height help them ? 
(iv) What is their favourite food?
Answers
(i) The giraffe is the tallest animal on this earth. 
(ii) The maximum height of a giraffe is upto 15-18 ft.
(iii) Their height helps to escape the competition for ground level grass. 
(iv)Their favourite food is acacia leaves.
