LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS
Q. 1. 'Father cares more for money than for me'. Why does Padma say so ? Have you ever felt like Padma ? Explain.
Ans. Padma says so because she finds her father lacking in emotions. She thinks him incapable of loving. In her opinion, her father gives more importance to money than to her.
Sometimes when my parents do not give me time or listen to me with proper care and attention I also feel like Padmaneglected and unwanted. On such occasions, I feel that I am no more than a commodity to my parents-only an object to gratify their sense of achievement. This I feel more acutely when they only focus on my performance rather than on my personal feelings and emotions.
Q. 2. What, according to Padma's father, is the identity of a woman? Do you agree with him?
Ans. According to Padma's father, it is the marriage that lends identity to a woman. In other words, a woman's identity depends on the identity of her husband. A woman on her own has no identity as such.
It is very difficult for me to agree with the view of Padma's father. It is male chauvinism that thinks women inferior to him. In reality there is no difference between a man and a woman. They both have their own independent identity and should be treated on equal terms. There are several instances to prove that women are in no way inferior to men. Rani Laxmi Bai, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Kalpana Chawala, Sunita Williams and Sania Mirza are some of the examples to prove that women too have their own individuality.
Q. 3. What question did Padma ask that her mother calls senseless? Why did Padma's mother call it senseless ? Explain.
Ans. The questions that her mother calls senseless is : "What if one does not get married ?" Padma's mother firmly believes that marriage lends identity to a woman and that a woman without a husband is nothing. So when Padma questions the importance of husband or marriage in connection with woman's identity, her mother gets irritated and calls her questions senseless.
Q. 4. What is the injustice that Padma talked about?
Ans. The injustice that Padma talked about is that of a woman's life becoming hell after her husband's death. She doesnot like the idea that a woman's identity should be so dependent on her husband. She has come to believe that home in fact is a place of bargaining and women should refuse to live in such a place.
Q. 5. Sketch the character of Padma.
Ans. Padma is a young girl with modern outlook. She feels agrieved and agitated by the uncharitably orthodox attitude of the society towards women. She repeatedly questions her parents about the rights and the identity of a woman and asks them whether her identity is subject to her marriage. As a young woman she craves for an identity of her own. The idea that she will get her identity through her husband is unpalatable to her. She believes in the equality between man and woman. She is pained to find the double standard in the society: an unmarried man is venerated and called a saint while an unmarried woman is called immoral and wanton.
Q. 6. Padma's mother is the true image of a typical traditional woman. Elaborate.
Ans. Padma's mother is the true image of a typical traditional woman. She cannot even imagine of having an independent identity from her husband. She does not think that she is in any way different from him. She tells her daughter, "My identity is linked with his and I cherish the bond." She strongly believes that a woman without husband has no existence at all. A woman should always comply with what her husband asks and never ask any question.

Q. 8. Why is the lesson called 'Dharam Juddha' ? Give reasons.
Ans. The title 'Dharam Juddha' reminds one of instance from the Mahabharata-the battle between the Kauravas and the Pandavas. Lord Shri Krishna encouraged Arjuna to raise arms against his elders and the Gurus on the plea that it was a 'Dharma yuddha'-a war for righteousness. A man should not hesitate in raising arms against injustice; no matter that it has been committed by his near and dear ones. In the given lesson, Padma, challenges her parents on the question of woman's right, her independent identity. It is because of the spirit of challenge that the lesson is called 'Dharam Juddha.'
