This great ruler was cursed by his father-in-law Shukracharya. He became old before time. He was in great miseries. He had desire for sexual enjoyment. He called his five virtuous sons and told them to exchange their youth to his old age. But no one was ready to accept his proposal. The emperor was very sad because his three sons declined to do as he wished.
The fourth son also beg pardon, as he was not consented to his father's proposal. At last Yayati went to his last son and told him politely about the burden of his old age. He promised his last son to return his youth after enjoying a little of his age. Puru accepted the proposal of his father. Now, Yayati became youth and his last son, Puru rulled the kingdom.
Yayati enjoyed life for long. He went to the garden of Kubera and spent many years, joyfully. But he was not satisfied. At last he returned to Puru and told him that sexual desire cannot be quenched. Nothing can ever satisfy the desires.
Yayati took back his old age from Puru and advised him to rule wisely. He went to the forest from where he attained heaven after sometime.
'ययाति', चमन लाल द्वारा लिखित भारत की आध्यात्मिक कहानियों से ली गई महाभारत की एक प्रसिद्ध कहानी है। इस कहानी में 'ययाति' पांडवों के पूर्वज थे। यह महान सम्राट कभी पराजित नहीं हुआ। उन्होंने शास्त्रों का पाठ किया और पूरी भक्ति के साथ देवताओं की पूजा की। वह प्रसिद्ध शासक था जो अपनी प्रजा के कल्याण के लिए समर्पित था।
इस महान शासक को उसके ससुर शुक्राचार्य ने श्राप दिया था। वह समय से पहले बूढ़ा हो गया। वह बड़े दुख में था। उसे यौन सुख की इच्छा थी। उसने अपने पांच गुणी पुत्रों को बुलाया और उनसे कहा कि वे अपनी जवानी को अपने बुढ़ापे में बदल दें। लेकिन कोई भी उनके प्रस्ताव को मानने को तैयार नहीं था। सम्राट बहुत दुखी था क्योंकि उसके तीन बेटों ने उसकी इच्छा के अनुसार काम करने से मना कर दिया था।
चौथा पुत्र भी क्षमा चाहता है, क्योंकि वह अपने पिता के प्रस्ताव से सहमत नहीं था। अंत में ययाति अपने अंतिम पुत्र के पास गए और उन्हें अपने बुढ़ापे के बोझ के बारे में विनम्रता से बताया। उसने अपने आखिरी बेटे से वादा किया कि वह अपनी उम्र का थोड़ा सा आनंद लेने के बाद अपनी जवानी लौटाएगा। पुरु ने अपने पिता के प्रस्ताव को स्वीकार कर लिया। अब, ययाति युवा हो गए और उनके अंतिम पुत्र, पुरु ने राज्य पर शासन किया।
ययाति ने लंबे समय तक जीवन का आनंद लिया। वह कुबेर के बगीचे में गया और कई साल खुशी-खुशी बिताए। लेकिन वह संतुष्ट नहीं था। अंत में वह पुरु के पास लौट आया और उससे कहा कि कामवासना को बुझाया नहीं जा सकता। कोई भी वस्तु कभी भी इच्छाओं की पूर्ति नहीं कर सकती।
ययाति ने पुरु से अपना बुढ़ापा वापस ले लिया और उसे बुद्धिमानी से शासन करने की सलाह दी। वह वन में चला गया जहाँ से उसे कुछ समय बाद स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति हुई।
